The little family lived in the suburbs of Boston and it was easy living for Caroline or as she would later insist on being called, Cece. When Caroline was around school age, Heather tried her luck to see if her daughter would be a viable candidate for the pageant circuit when she wasn't busy teaching sixth grade English. Greg wasn't thrilled at the prospect, seeing it as a way for the young mother to hold onto her youth and live through her daughter but Caroline couldn't quite wrap her mind around how important pageant life was to her mother. All she knew was how to throw an award winning smile at the judges, prance around on stage, and that she got to play dress up. Caroline wasn't quite shy but she wasn't as flashy as the other girls who tried a little too hard, leading her to be able to claim local and regional titles. Caroline was happy and Heather took on a new career as a pageant coach once word spread that her daughter was picking up the mantle. It was both in the DNA and a skill that Caroline had picked up.
Unfortunately, the Caroline that strutted around in heels and sashes was different from the Caroline who ran amok on the playground. After having another girl in her class named Caroline as well, she started going by the nickname "Cece". She lived two lives; one as Caroline the beauty queen and another as Cece the rough and tumble girl who didn't care about getting dirt on her overalls and liked playing kickball. Her two secret lives didn't collide until high school and she enjoyed the duality of being a "normal" girl off stage as well as putting on the Caroline persona when she was on stage. She tried not to let it show that it hurt when Cece didn't have her mother's approval like Caroline had but she remained grateful for her father, who loved her no matter who she was - although much to her mother's disdain, he did try to see if Cece would prefer softball but it didn't go over that well.
Caroline's family was dealt a devastating blow when her father got in too deep with some nefarious characters and refused to throw a baseball game. As retaliation, a thug broke Greg's hand ensuring that he'd never play ball again. Her father lapsed into a deep depression before reluctantly accepting a job as a coach for a high school varsity team before eventually being offered to coach the Lowell Spinners. With her father's days of glory behind him, Caroline knew she had to step up to help her family. So, she endured her awkward teen years on the stage, knowing that pageant titles equaled money that the family needed but before had gone into her college fund. To this day, Caroline doesn't know the real reason behind her father's injury as he told his wife and daughter he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. As the only child, Caroline took it upon herself to make her parents proud - bringing home good grades and local and regional pageant titles. To her, it was the only option to restore dignity to the family name.
Her peers, however, were less than receptive once they learned that Cece the unassuming student council secretary was in fact Caroline the teen beauty queen who had snatched a local title from one of her classmates' cousins. Thus, she became a target of bullying in school and looked at the pageant world as her only way out from the reality she lived in. She still couldn't shake the feeling of being a glorified show pony but the torment of her classmates hurt a little less when she knew she could win over the judges with a well placed smile and a dash of charm.
Years of hardwork paid off and Caroline finally was crowned Miss Massachusetts Teen USA, making it to the top fifteen of the Miss Teen USA pageant. Opportunities came pouring in, such as local modeling offers that Caroline took to help pad her college fund now that her father was back working. Suddenly, Caroline was mystified that everyone wanted to be friends with her after a few years of ridicule but knew the fickle nature of fame and popularity. They wanted to be friends with Miss Massachusetts, not the girl she was when she was off stage. Caroline's reputation suffered again with her being labelled as "thinking she was too good for everyone" and she retreated into academics even more. It wasn't until college where Caroline really began to find herself and true friends at Emerson College - mostly because no one there really cared about her pageant past. It was a relief to Caroline who still participated in the circuit and rode the gravy train all the way until the Miss USA pageant where she failed to place in 2014.
Out of the pageant circuit and out of college, Caroline has a degree under her belt but doesn't have a clue as to what she wants out of life. She keeps a steady job and a roof over her head as she tries to figure it out, getting to finally know herself beyond all of the make up and sashes for the first time in her life.
